Cyclists tell Howard 'On yer bike'by Beck Pearse ()MEDIA RELEASE: On Monday morning, 17th September, a group of cyclists will leave Canberra on the second leg of their mammoth journey from Rockhampton, QLD, to Adelaide. The group of concerned citizens, Cycle Against the Nuclear Cycle have spent the last 3 months visiting areas likely to be effected by the current federal governments plans to install nuclear power in Australia. "John Howard has asked for a fair and balanced debate on nuclear power, so we have decided what better way to do this than to visit communities and listen to peoples concerns directly" said spokesperson Beck Pearse. After encircling parliament house 2 weeks ago with over 200 cyclists, the group will be riding south through Gippsland to Melbourne and on to Adelaide. "One of the major concerns Australians have raised is that nuclear power is being pushed as solution to global warming, yet the nuclear fuel cycle in all other countries contributes huge amounts of greenhouse gas emissions. Australia needs binding renewable energy targets now, not more stalling by our politicians" Pearse said. The group has been liaising with local government and campaign groups throughout their ride."Residents have sent us a clear message, if this federal government tries to force nuclear power and waste dumps on them, then this election year it will 'on yer bike' for Mr Howard " Pearse said. Cyclists will be meeting 8.30am Gareema Place Civic, Monday 17th September before heading south to Cooma and Melbourne. Everyone is welcome to join the cyclists on Monday, whether for an hour, the day or the next two months. Contact |
